Performance as part of the exhibition The Power of My Hands, Africa(s): Women Artists
Buhlebezwe Siwani explores themes of spirituality and femininity through a multimedia practice that combines photography, sculpture, installation and performance. As a sangoma (traditional healer), she continues to study and question the foundations of the world around her.
During her residency at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris, she conceived an installation and presented a performance questioning the maternal and spiritual ties of black women from the diaspora.
It is from an emblematic spitirual event of South African culture that takes place every January 1st, in which the whole population meets to swim and free itself from its sins, that she decides to seize the symbolism of the water bottle as an element of ritual.
