Since the 1980s, Kerry James Marshall has engaged with the traditions, genres, and conventions of Western painting, while making the Black figure a central subject of his work. This session will examine the representation of Black figures in Western art, the evolution of Black figurative painting, and the strategies Marshall has employed to rethink and renew the canons of art history.

Biographies 

 

Anne Lafont

Anne Lafont is an art historian and Directrice d’études at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS). Her research focuses on art in the Black Atlantic. In 2019, she published L’art et la Race. L’Africain (tout) contre l’oeil des Lumières and contributed to the exhibition Le Modèle noir de Géricault à Matisse at the Musée d’Orsay. She co-edited, with François-Xavier Fauvelle, L’Afrique et le monde. Histoires renouées (2022). Her most recent book, published in Brazil, is A Arte dos mundos negros: história, teoria, crítica (2023).

 

Denise Murrell

Denise Murrell, PhD, is the Merryl H. and James S. Tisch Curator at Large, Office of the Director, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She was the curator of The Met’s exhibition The Harlem Renaissance and Transatlantic Modernism (2024) and of Posing Modernity: The Black Model from Manet and Matisse to Today (2018/19) at Columbia University’s Wallach Art Gallery; and co-curator of the exhibition’s expansion at the Musée d’Orsay, Paris, as Le Modèle Noir de Géricault à Matisse (2019) She was guest curator of Matisse and Martinique: Portraits and Poetry at the Baltimore Museum of Art (2026).

 

Kelly-Christina Grant

Kelly-Christina Grant est conseillère scientifique de l’exposition Kerry James Marshall: The Histories au Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris. Elle est doctorante en histoire de l’art à l’Université Paris Nanterre où elle achève une thèse consacrée à l’artiste de la Harlem Renaissance Loïs Mailou Jones. Ses recherches portent sur l’art africain américain. Elle est titulaire d’un Master en Études anglophones – Arts et culture visuelle de l’Université Paris Cité (2020) dans le cadre duquel elle a rédigé le mémoire Time, Culture and History in the Figurative Painting of Kerry James Marshall.
